Coordinator - Maxine Cherry

Maxine

I am a native of Byron, Georgia, and attended Peach County Schools in Fort Valley. I am the baby in my family of nine children. I have two children, Steve and Sade, and five beautiful grandchildren Cortez, Cameron, Kennedy, Maxton, and Makensie.

My most admirable collegiate moment occurred during my sophomore year in college when I was invited to try out for the Saint Louis Streakers, a professional women's basketball team. Upon graduation from Ft. Valley State College, I became a physical educator and coach at Peach County High School where I served for 32 years until my retirement in 2016. It was an honor to serve as head coach of the Peach County High School Lady Trojans from 1984 - 2016. My educational philosophy is that every child can learn and be successful in whatever they desire if they apply themselves. I have helped many students to reach their goals through encouragement, mentoring and recommendations.

Over the years I have been able to help students become successful college graduates, and outstanding professionals in various fields of study. On March 17, 2016, Mayor Barbara Williams of Ft. Valley, GA. declared it Coach Maxine Cherry Day. It was also a privilege for me when I was inducted into The Fort Valley State University 2016 Hall of Fame.

Now that I am retired, I am embarking on a new career as PEP Grant Coordinator for the Bibb County High Schools, where I am able to help physical educators enable students in reaching their fitness goals.
