Health and PE Coordinator

Jena Derzi

Jena Derzi has been a Physical Education and Health educator for 27 years.  She began her teaching career at McEvoy Middle School where she taught for two years.  For the next 11 years, she taught at a local private school; however, in 2005 she returned to the Bibb County School District. She taught for 3 years at Heritage Elementary and 4 years at Sonny Carter Elementary before becoming an ELA instructional coach for 1 year at Southwest High School under the SIG grant.  The next year she returned to teaching and taught Study Skills first semester at Bloomfield Middle, and second semester she worked in Kindergarten at Barden Elementary.  Coach Derzi returned to teaching physical education the next year at Bernd and Jones Elementary schools for one year.  When Jones merged with MLK, she was moved to her last teaching assignment at Springdale Elementary.  She continued teaching at Springdale for 1 ½ years before becoming the PEP Grant physical education coordinator for elementary and middle schools. With the start of the 2019-2020 school year, Coach Derzi moved into the newly created position of Health and Physical Education Coordinator for the Bibb County School District.
Coach Derzi earned her associate degree from Macon Jr. College, and her bachelors’ of science degree in Health & Physical Education from Georgia College and State University where she received the Outstanding Department Major award.  She received her master’s degrees in Health & Physical Education and Educational Leadership from Georgia College and State University.  Coach Derzi is a member of Shape America, the Georgia Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Association, and PAGE.  She also serves as the Health & Physical Education county representative to the DOE, she is a DOE Ambassador for elementary physical education, and she served on the writing committee for the new Physical Education Georgia Standards of Excellence.  Coach Derzi also serves as the NFL Play 60 FitnessGram Champion for the district. 
Coach Derzi is a native to Macon, and she has been married for 31 years.  She has a daughter and a son who both graduated from Rutland High School and the most precious, wonderful grandson.
