Summer is a great time for students to relax, read books for pleasure and continue their love of learning. The Bibb County School District realizes that reading is an essential skill that serves to enrich students’ lives and help them be successful in school. Each year the Bibb County School District provides recommended reading lists for students in grades K - 11 as part of the district Summer Reading Plan. Parents will receive a Summer Reading Program letter describing the reading requirements for all students this summer. To see a digital copy of the letter click on the link above titled 2018 Summer Reading Program. Bibb County students can also access digital books on the myOn.com web site this summer. To access these resources go to myOn.com, enter Get Georgia Reading as the school name, bibbcounty as the user name, and the password is read.

During the summer break students are encouraged to choose books that are about things that interest them and that they enjoy reading. Students are also encouraged to include some books in their Lexile range for summer reading. By doing this they will continue to improve their reading skills. However, reading only books in your Lexile reading range is not a requirement for summer reading. Students should read 15 - 30 minutes per day, or 25 hrs. for the entire summer. Reading can include reading independently, reading to someone, or being read to. Students will receive a log to document their reading. Additional logs are also available for downloading by clicking on the link above. All BCSD 2018 Summer Reading Logs are to be turned in to homeroom teachers in the fall.

We also encourage parents to take students to visit their nearest public library branch to participate in the public library summer reading program as well as fun activities. Participants in the public library summer reading program can also win prizes by submitting their logs to the librarian when finished. As part of our collaboration with the Middle Georgia Regional Library System, we are providing parents with opportunities to sign up for the public library 2018 Summer Reading program at all elementary and middle schools. Adults and students who are 14 or older, can sign up for the public library Summer Reading Program online by clicking the link above and completing the online form.

We encourage everyone, children and adults, to participate in a summer reading program this summer!

Have a wonderful summer and enjoy reading!
