Thank You, Teachers! - 5/3/21

Many of you do not know this, but I send a weekly update to our Board of Education, Principals, Directors and Senior Cabinet giving them an update on the happenings for the past week. This past weekend, my update began with, “It’s May; where has the time gone?”

What also comes with May is a great time, which is Teacher Appreciation Week! This particular year stands out like no other. I believe America recognizes and fully appreciates the work teachers and educators have done. The past 14 months have been trying, they’ve been stressful, they have pushed us to new limits, and they have given us a way to change and transform public education in America. You have done amazingly well, and I am so proud of you. This week of Teacher Appreciation is a special time. I hope you enjoy it and have an opportunity to take in some of the benefits.

As I opened one document today, I saw a proclamation on National Teacher Appreciation Day and National Teacher Appreciation Week 2021 from President Joe Biden. It began this way: “As the proud husband of an educator who continues, as First Lady, to teach writing at a community college, I have seen firsthand the dedication, selflessness, and vision of our Nation’s educators.  They play so many different roles:  They are mentors who guide with creativity and care; advocates who fight for students’ needs; role models who help students dream and dare more boldly; and leaders who tirelessly support the families and communities that depend on them.  Every day, with every student they reach, educators build the future of our country, and we are grateful for their commitment to our shared future.  This National Teacher Appreciation Day and National Teacher Appreciation Week, we honor the service and passion and celebrate the immeasurable contributions of our Nation’s educators in schools from coast to coast.” To read the full proclamation, click here.

But not to be outdone, many restaurants also are showing some love for teachers this week with offers of free food. At Sonic, teachers can snag a free large drink or Slush when they use the code TEACHERS while ordering online or on the Sonic app. At Krispy Kreme, if you got your COVID-19 vaccine, they will give you a free doughnut every day through December 31. At Buffalo Wild Wings, teachers and staff can trim 20 percent off their order at participating restaurants all week through May 7. At Huddle House, educators can stop in for a free meal and drink up to $10 on Teacher Appreciation Day as long as they show their school ID. To read about more deals, click here.

Across the country, across the state, and here in Bibb County, we are so thankful for you. As part of this celebration, on Teacher Appreciation Day (Tuesday, May 4) you will be receiving the bonus payment Gov. Brian Kemp and State School Superintendent Richard Woods promised. We are very proud to be able to share this bonus with you. Let’s make this a great week. Take time to reflect, and just know how appreciated you are.
