Anderson Scholarship Applications

On Tuesday, January 10, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, the family of Newton and Sara Anderson, and the Bibb County School District announced a new scholarship fund to incentivize student achievement in Bibb County Public Schools.

The Newton and Sara Anderson Scholarship for Excellence of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia will provide college scholarships to highly qualified students from Bibb County public high schools who have demonstrated outstanding academic merit and achievement as well as strong character, work ethic and leadership.

To be invited to apply for this scholarship this spring, current Bibb County public school high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA at the end of fall semester 2016 and zero out-of-school suspensions throughout their high school career. The students must also attend a Bibb County public high school, which are currently Northeast H.S., Southwest H.S., Westside H.S., Rutland H.S., Howard H.S., Central H.S. and the Academy for Classical Education.

Eligible students will receive a written invitation to apply for the scholarship in the near future. Eligible freshmen, sophomores and juniors must complete the online application by noon on February 17. Eligible seniors must complete the online application by noon on March 15. The online application is available on the Community Foundation’s website at www.cfcga.org. After the deadline, the applicants will be narrowed down to a group of semi-finalists, who will be interviewed. Following the interviews, approximately 60 students will be selected to receive this prestigious college scholarship award.

“What makes this scholarship unique is that current 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade Bibb County students will be selected this year to receive the college scholarship upon successful completion of high school, as long as they maintain the scholarship’s eligibility criteria. Knowing a year or more in advance that they have a $10,000 scholarship dedicated to their future college education should provide a strong incentive for these students to stay on track academically and behaviorally. This scholarship will be a tool for the faculty and staff of the Bibb County School District to help encourage, motivate and incentivize outstanding performance from its students,” said Dr. Curtis Jones Jr., Superintendent of Bibb County School District.

Newton and Sara Anderson were married in Atlanta in 1941. Newton was a Command Pilot in World War II and enjoyed a long and successful business career. Sara was an energetic and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother, and she volunteered and enjoyed gardening. They were solidly and consistently devoted to unquestionable character, citizenship, patriotism and service to others, especially young people. They were also firmly bonded to their Lord's grace and love, and to His message of outreach to His children. Children were very special to both of them. To honor the legacy of their parents, John and Bob Anderson created the Newton and Sara Anderson Scholarship for Excellence at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. They firmly believe that their parents would want to impact the most number of children in a meaningful way through this fund.

“This scholarship fund is a fitting tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson who loved children and would want to ensure that as many children as possible have the opportunity to attend college, which is a luxury that neither of them had during the Great Depression. The Community Foundation is a great place for families, like the Andersons, to create their own family legacy and support the community they love,” said Kathryn Dennis, President of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
